RS Feva review 2021

  • December 14, 2021

Despite a pandemic-stricken year for the class, the previous year was an outstanding one in terms of the activity of the domestic fleet, with an unprecedented level of participation by children and clubs in the class’s ranking competitions in 2021.

The biggest strengths of RS Feva boats are cheap maintenance, multi-purpose use (racing and camping), easy handling, and a well-organised class association. The low cost of racing gives everyone the opportunity to join the national junior scene. The World and European Championships for this type of boat are held with 200-210 boats participating, while 30-60 boats appear at a single stop of the European Cup series.

“2021 has been the most successful year for the RS Feva class, despite the fact that the class is not one of the supported youth classes.”

said class captain Richárd Náray, evaluating the past year.

The class has met all MVSZ requirements for youth classes since 2018. The number of competitors in the ranking competitions has enabled the RS Fevá competitors to achieve valid class status and ranking results year after year since 2018.

By 2021, big clubs such as TVSK, BYC1912 and THE, which will be competing in the Hungarian Championship, will have joined the RS Feva class.

“We are particularly pleased that TVSK, as the largest domestic sailing club, has chosen the RS Feva class as its junior division and has contributed to the class’ high quality racing season by organising two ranking events in the first year of its entry.”

added the class captain

One of the strengths of the RS Feva class is that not only do the “traditional” junior clubs have a racing team on the north shore of the eastern basin of Lake Balaton, but the class also has a strong fleet in the western basin of Lake Balaton, creating a broad base for junior racing. The average age of the boats in our country is 3-4 years, which makes the class competitive among the domestic junior classes, as we can say that any of the units in our country are suitable for racing.

The activity of the RS Feva class in 2021 is characterised by the fact that it has now become the largest domestic two-person replacement fleet. In fact, with 72 ranking competitors, it is the second largest UP class in our country after the OP, and it has not only taken children from existing classes, but has also added new entrants to the youth racing camp.

In recent years, the department has ensured the activity of (traditional) large and smaller clubs and the development of new youth bases. As a result, the ranking and international competitions, the national championships have been present in both the eastern and western basins of Lake Balaton. When organising the competitions, great care is taken to ensure that the members of the organising and refereeing teams are of the highest calibre.

In 2021, the RS Feva class organised its ranking competitions in the following locations and units:

The data shows that we have an average of 24 units taking part in our races, but we also had 16 boats on the start line in our smallest boat ranking race this year. In both the national championship and our international competition, 29 units took part.

The progress of the last three to four years can be followed:

This year was also a year of international success. The VGYE crew representing the Hungarian team won 3 of the 8 EC races in the Czech Republic, and also took home the EC trophy. The activity of the women’s class is also ahead of international trends in the country.

In 2021, the Hungarian Championships of the RS Feva class produced the following results:

The outlook for 2022 is also good…

2022 could be another outstanding year in the class. According to RS Sailing Hungary, the distributor of the boats, 9-11 new boats will arrive in 2022, of which we hope 3-4 will be racing. The class’s 2022 racing calendar has also been finalised, with the welcome result that the Hungarian championship will be held in the western basin of Lake Balaton and a European Cup will be organised by the VGYE in Káptalanfüred. The class has applied to host the RS Feva European Championships in 2023, while in 2022 the continental championship will be held in Lipno, Czech Republic, a venue well known to some of the home fleet. This will attract up to 6-8 Hungarian teams due to the proximity of the venue.
